AGM-Dinner

The 2008 AGM was held in the NYC on April 16. It's great to see some new faces taking a more active role in the club. Jo is taking over from Nicola as Dinghy Secretary, Morgan and Donal will replacing Peter as Ruffian secretary, Colm is taking over from Ann as Treasurer and Martina is our new safety officer. Brenda and Wyn will remain on as secretary and maintenance chief. Thanks to outgoing committee members Ann, Peter & Nicola for all their good work during the last year.

The meeting was followed by an excellent dinner in the NYC clubhouse. Thanks to Bronagh for organizing.

Cruiser Purchase

We have now completed the purchase of the Sigma-33 Obsession. The boat is lying on the marina, which gives easy access and we also have access to facilities. We now have regular sailing sessions running, and hopefully will have some cruising further afield later in the year. The Ruffian will continue to sail both in racing and as a backup cruising option.

The cruiser purchase was discussed at the AGM and members were very positive and were looking forward to a great season's sailing. This purchase has however increased our running costs especially marina fees, so to remain viable we do need to increase our membership numbers...please spread the word and promote the club.

Frostbite Prizegiving

There was an informal competition among club members taking part in the frostbites this year. Thanks to Georgina, Jane & Juliane who organized a prize-giving at the NYC dinner.

Check out the winners here.

Even though no expense was spared in the provision of prizes, the final accounts still showed a surplus of e250, this was donated to the RNLI.

Be Obsessed!

With the welcome addition of our new Sigma 33 Obsession to the SID fleet there are now more opportunities to increase your skills and your sea miles.  A guide to the appropriate skills you need to develop as novice, crew, vice captain or captain within SID, is located in the members area. This table provides links to appropriate reading and useful information for the various skills, and the recommended qualifications you should strive to obtain.

If you wish to keep a log of your skills this information can be printed using excel.   If you wish to obtain ISA qualifications then the ISA Cruising Scheme progression is Competent Crew to Coastal Skipper to Yachtmaster Coastal.

For the Yachtmaster Coastal practical exam you need 800 miles logged in tidal waters, with 25 days at sea, 3 days as skipper and 12 night hours (less if you take a take a shorebased course).  If this is your aim then you may need be Obsessed with sailing!  Taking a week long training course or cruise will cover lots or all of the skills you require in a structured manner and will also help you build up you sea miles and hours on the water.  This will give you the confidence and the desire to take Obsession on longer cruises in order to gain your Yachtmaster certificate.

DBSC Racing

Racing started on April 29 and will run untill September. There are three dinghies entered, racing on Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon... contact Wyn if you'd like to take part. The Ruffian is also entered racing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday afternoon, contact Damien to take part (note: the Ruffian is not yet racing as we need to replace some of the rigging, but we should be good to go the week after this)

Regatta Season

The Summer regattas season start at the end of the month. This year there will be four individual club regattas so that lots of chances to race. We will enter dinghies and the Ruffian subject to interest. Why not get out sailing now and get in shape for all that strawberries and cream.

GISC Discount

Glenans Ireland are offering all Sailing In Dublin members a 10% discount on any course booking this year.

Open Day

We are organizing a taster day with Glenwalk on Saturday June 7. We need people particularly to come dinghy sailing and bring out walkers as crew, but also to help with organization. Please contact Angela if you can help.

Instructor Training

Congratulations to Jo who completed the ISA Dinghy Instructor this Easter, and to Jane who did the assistant instructor training in Collanmore last month. We now have nine instructors in the club and two assistants so there shouldn't be any shortage of helpful advice and assistance if needed.

Most peoples qualifications are on the dinghy front. With the opportunity the Sigma offers, it would be great to see more people push on to do Dayboat Instructor or Coastal Skipper in real boats. Having some definite goals is a great way to focus on improving your sailing skills.

Social & Personal

Congratulations to Sheenagh and John who tied the knot on April 28. Damien, Brenda Nicola and Wyn have joined the happy couple for a romantic sailing honeymoon in Minorca this week.

Martina is off to Antigua later this week to sail back across the Atlantic to Kinsale via the Azores. Bon voyage.
