WHAT WE DO

Daysails - Keelboats

Our Keelboat Daysails are organised throughout the week, with any member being able to schedule a daysail on the website. When sufficient interest is received, and an experienced Captain and Vice-Captain are assigned, the session proceeds. 

Sessions occur seven days a week and can be during the day or the evening. These sessions are normally run on our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 35, Silver Wind or our Beneteau First 31.7, Mayfly. 

Sessions can be general sailing in Dublin Bay or training sessions. Longer sessions, such as those during the day may go further afield to locations such as Greystones, Howth, Poolbeg, or around the Kish.

Absolutely no experience in sailing is required to join us on a keelboat session. If you want to try out the club before committing, you are more than welcome to join us on a session as a guest.

Daysails - Dinghies

We typically sail within the Harbour or nearby depending on weather conditions. Sessions can include training exercises, informal racing or occasional trips to somewhere such as Dalkey Island.

Safety cover is provided and all participants are expected to take a turn to help with manning the safety boat. If you have no powerboating experience this is a great way to learn.

Some previous experience in dinghy sailing is required to take part in dinghy sessions, but all our boats are two-handers so there will always be at least one experienced crew on each boat.

Keelboat Racing

DBSC Racing

DBSC racing runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from May to September. Ruff Diamond is usually entered in the one-design ruffian class. Those who wish to take part contribute to the entry fee and the class registration fee. Racing is at 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on Saturday afternoons. No previous racing experience is required so this is an ideal introduction to racing.

Turkey Shoot/Spring Chicken

These are Sunday morning keelboat races organised from October to March. Mayfly is usually entered and a crew rota is created. Again, no previous racing experience is required so this is another ideal introduction to racing.

Offshore Racing

Mayfly usually takes part in ISORA offshore races when available. Some previous racing experience is required to take part in this, and for longer passage races, some previous live-aboard experience is essential.

Regattas/Other Events

Entry to other regattas and events such as the Dún Laoghaire Regatta, the Dún Laoghaire Club Regattas, the Ruffian Nationals, and the Lambay Race are organised as, and when, they take place. Participation is open to all members.

 

Dinghy Racing

DMYC Frostbites

Frostbites are winter dinghy races run in Dún Laoghaire by the Dún Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club (DMYC). Racing is every Sunday for approximately one hour with the starting gun at 1.30 pm. Racing runs from the start of November to the end of March.

Sailing In Dublin Club enters a number of boats and encourages all members to take part. The nominal entry fee is split between those taking part, and crew positions are assigned on a rota. The less experienced crew are paired with old hands, so everybody gets to take part. The Frostbites are a relaxed fun event and a great introduction to dinghy racing.

DBSC Racing

DBSC dinghy racing runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays from May to September. Participants would need to have done Level 3 Dinghy Training or have equivalent experience. Those who wish to take part share the cost of entry and a rota is organised

Regattas/Other Events

Entry to other regattas and events such as the Dún Laoghaire Regatta or the Dún Laoghaire Club Regattas are organised as, and when, they take place.

Mini-cruises

For many of our members, club-organised mini-cruises are often the first time they’ve stayed overnight on a keelboat. We organise mini-cruises on both our Sun Odyssey 35 and Beneteau First 31.7.

These sessions are either held over a normal weekend, departing Friday, and returning Sunday, or over a long weekend, departing Friday and returning Monday. The first night of a mini-cruise is free for members, with the second night onwards, being charged at €25 per person per night, and the maximum number of people on the boat would be six.

Typical destinations include Ardglass, Carlingford, the Isle of Man, Holyhead, the Menai Straits, Wicklow Town or Arklow. A number of potential destinations would count as Yachtmaster Offshore Qualifying Passages, and it is not unusual to return from a mini-cruise having gained 120 or more nautical miles in your Logbook. 

As you may see, this is an extremely cost-effective way of gaining miles under your belt and experiencing new, unfamiliar ports.

Weeklong Cruises

Each year, our Cruising Committee develops an extensive programme of 10 weeks plus summer cruising for our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 35, Silver Wind. For a small fee of €150, members are able to sign-up for weeks in a number of different, varied locations.

Over the past number of years, these locations have included:

  • Circumnavigation of Ireland
  • Western Isles of Scotland
  • The Isles of Scilly
  • Cornwall
  • Wales
  • The Isle of Man
In 2023, Silver Wind will not only visit South and Western Ireland, but also return to the Isles of Scilly before proceeding on to the Atlantic Coast of France.
